The 1996 DEP Sessions – What the Online Critics Said

…the very high calibre of songwriting on display here makes it immediately clear that Iommi and Hughes had little difficulty in rekindling the fires of their original collaboration…..most experts will agree that this is a historic and highly recommended release for serious metalheads.

The combination of Iommi’s sharp and lightning quick guitar licks and the soulful vocalizations of Hughes make for a lethal combination. Every track is an assault of the senses, and an enjoyable one. This may well be the best album you never heard. Usually recordings that finally get the dust blown off after sitting in the can for years are not this good. You can count on a great listen from start to finish with this album. This is the hard-hitting crunch of metal drone with rock and blues-killer stuff.

…an explosive record full of both of their talent….I was amazed how simple and yet brilliant the music of these two great personalities of rock [is]. It’s also impressing that these recordings are eight years old, but still sound fresh and new. Highly recommended.

Every self-respecting hardrocker should fall to his knees when hearing the name Tony Iommi…This is an excellent, balanced (hard) rock album and therefore a must-have for fans and a must-listen for real oldschool hardrock lovers!

The songs are fresh and raw like rock should be. What a God-given voice has Glenn Hughes…and together with Iommi guitar playing it gives something irresistible. It just sounds so damn good….This album is going to withstand the test of time. I only hope that Iommi and Hughes sit down one day soon and realize that their collaboration needs continuing. 4.5 stars.

I always felt there was something special between Iommi’s melodic, bluesy side and the gutsy vocals of Hughes, and the formula works well once again….There are a bunch of rousing metal anthems, such as the powerful opener ‘Gone’ and the melodic ‘Fine….Of course, no recent Iommi project would be complete without a dark and brooding blues rocker, and ‘It Falls Through Me’ fits the bill on this CD. Iommi’s gutsy lead guitar work on this one is fuelled by the powerful vocals of Hughes, who seems right at home signing this heavy, slow blues material. 4 stars.

Sanctuary have come along and stepped up to release what to me is some of Tony’s best work in years!...Each song is perfect in its own way, from the opening power of Gone, to the incredible chorus driven melody of Don’t Drag The River, this CD has everything that a Tony Iommi or Glenn Hughes fan will love. 10/10.

Metal-exiles.com

It’s modern without being trendy, and classic without being dated….This kind of chemistry is very rare. CD of the week, 13th October 2004.

…A genuine album, not an attempt to meet the demands of a flickering label deal. It’s a pleasant and reassuring head turner.

…thundering, ultra heavy riffs and wonderful vocals. 82/100 (Clearly above average, you should check this one out).
