Black Sabbath
Black Box: The Complete Original Black Sabbath (1970 – 1978)
(Rhino/Warner)
Guitar One – June 2004
(Excerpt)
…The sharp remastering job certainly spotlights how Tony Iommi revised the book
on hard-rock rhythm guitar – by pushing up the overdrive and rendering
blues-scale progressions into atomic dirges. And anyone who pays attention to
the non-metallic curveballs of Iommi’s early work – the high-water mark
(Paranoid, 1971), the underrated experiment (Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, 1973)…will
find a guitarist more diverse than his reputation suggests.
MOMENT OF TRUTH: “Black Sabbath” (0:37 – 1:07)
Iommi’s booming distortion, trills, augmented 4ths, and rapid vibrato add up to
the creepiest, most unnerving guitar riff in rock history.
